In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Mushroom Hill Zone is a location on Angel Island in an alternate dimension set in the recent past.

Mushroom Hill Zone, from Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special. When playing as Knuckles, the game proceeds often with secondary paths not available to Sonic and Tails. From this point on, Giant Rings (distinguishable by the colors of the Emeralds which it flashes) transport the player to the Hidden Palace Zone for another chance at a Super Emerald. Here, all collected Chaos Emeralds' powers are taken by the Master Emerald and they are transformed into dormant Super Emeralds. In the complete game, Knuckles is hiding a glowing Giant Ring that takes the user to the island's Hidden Palace. Sonic then spies Knuckles closing the door to a passageway leading to a Warp Ring for the Special Stage. In the first Act, when playing as Sonic, Tails will airlift Sonic down from their free-fall after stopping the Death Egg's launch in the previous Zone. I would like to say this is quite simply fantastic.Mushroom Hill Zone contains lots of Giant Rings compared to other Zones in Sonic & Knuckles, making it important to collect as many Chaos Emeralds as possible before leaving this zone if aiming to collect all seven before completing the game. That bass and those chords are just so juicy. This is pretty freakin good! The lead is really great, and I love the way you incorporated Death Egg in spots! Fantastic!
